The Sämtisersee at around 1'057 metres in the Appenzell Pre-Alps is the largest natural lake in the Appenzell region. The broad, shallow body of water sits in a wide moorland basin below the Hoher Kasten cliff face and is known for its birdlife – in spring and autumn the lake provides important resting grounds for migratory birds.

A flat circular trail around the lake takes around 1 hour and is suitable for families and older visitors. The nature reserve around the lake is well maintained and signposted. The Sämtisersee is ideal for quiet nature experiences, birdwatching and relaxed walks – without major infrastructure and without the crowds of the nearby Seealpsee.

The Sämtisersee is reachable from Brülisau in the Rhine Valley pre-Alpine area by PostBus or car in around 15 minutes. Brülisau is accessible by Appenzellerbahn from Appenzell. Parking is available on the cantonal road at the lake outlet.
