Appenzell is the main village of the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden and one of the most colourful and authentic villages in Switzerland. The painted house facades, traditional woodcraft and the Landsgemeinde – probably the world's most well-known open-air democracy – make Appenzell a place of living tradition.
The Appenzell show dairy and the Museum Liner are the main cultural highlights. Hikes into the surrounding alpine meadows and up to Ebenalp begin directly from the village. Appenzell is also known for its Biberfladen pastry, Appenzell cheese and its distinctive folk culture of embroidery and herdsman's shirts.
Appenzell is reachable by Appenzellerbahn from St. Gallen in around 45 minutes. By car, take the route via Herisau or Gossau. Parking is available in the village and on the outskirts.
