Foroglio is a tiny stone hamlet at the end of the Val Bavona in Ticino – one of the most unspoilt and uninhabited valleys in Switzerland. The village consists of a handful of old rustici built from grey gneiss, surrounded by sheer walls over which impressive waterfalls cascade in spring and early summer – the Cascata di Foroglio, with a drop of around 110 metres, is the most striking.

The Val Bavona no longer has a permanent population – the villages are used today only as holiday homes or for alpine dairy farming. Hiking trails lead from Foroglio deeper into the valley and onto the surrounding alps. The drive through the Val Bavona itself – on a narrow, winding road with no crash barriers – is an experience in its own right. The valley is car-free above Bignasco.

Foroglio is reachable by PostBus from Locarno via Bignasco, with a total journey time of around 1.5 hours. By car, drive to Bignasco then continue by PostBus. Parking is available in Bignasco.
