Geneva is Switzerland's international city par excellence – home to the Red Cross, the World Health Organization (WHO), the UN European headquarters and over 200 other international organisations. The city at the outflow of the Rhône from Lake Geneva is cosmopolitan, multilingual and possessed of an elegance that is hard to define but immediately felt.

The Jet d'Eau – the iconic 140-metre water jet in the middle of the lake – is the city's landmark. The old town with St. Peter's Cathedral, the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire and Geneva's cobbled lanes has a different character from the new city. The Quartier des Nations with the UN buildings and CERN near Geneva are accessible to visitors through guided tours.

Geneva is reachable by train from Zurich in around 2.5 hours, from Bern in around 1.5 hours and from Lausanne in around 40 minutes. Geneva Airport is one of Switzerland's most important airports and lies directly on the city boundary. By car, take the A1 motorway.
