The Zugersee is the largest lake in the canton of Zug and lies in the heart of central Switzerland between the Rigi massif and the Zugerberg. The water glows in a calm turquoise and the shoreline is lined with well-kept small towns, villas and old orchards – a Swiss lake landscape that is less touristy than its more famous neighbours and draws a particular appeal precisely for that reason.

The town of Zug on the northern shore with its medieval old town and leaning tower is the centre. The southern shore offers quiet lakeshore paths, bathing spots and views of the Rigi and Pilatus. A circular lake trail connects both shores and is popular with cyclists. The settlement of Arth on the southern shore is the departure point for the Arth-Rigi Railway.

The Zugersee is accessible from Zurich by S-Bahn (via Zug) in around 35 minutes. By car, take the A4 motorway, Zug or Arth-Goldau exit. Boat services: zugersee-schifffahrt.ch
