On a rocky hill high above Lake Murten sits the picturesque medieval town of Murten – a jewel of Swiss old town architecture that has preserved its history as if under a glass dome. The completely preserved ring wall with 12 fortress towers from the 13th century is unique in Switzerland and can be walked along its entire length. From the wall, spectacular views open across the lake and the Alps beyond.

Within the medieval walls extend narrow lanes with beautifully restored house facades in pastel colors. The picturesque market square with fountain and Gothic church forms the heart of the place. Murten Castle also shapes the townscape. The lake itself offers diverse water sports opportunities – sailing, windsurfing, kayaking in summer, quiet autumn walks. In 2022 Murten was elected one of the 32 most beautiful tourism villages in the world by the World Tourism Organization.

The best season extends from May through September. The town center is car-free – ideal for strolling and exploring. Excellent restaurants characterize the gastronomy.
