The Saxer Lücke is a mountain saddle at around 1'649 metres between the Fälensee and the Staufen in the Appenzell Alps and is regarded as one of the most impressive viewpoints in eastern Switzerland. The crossing connects the Appenzell hinterland with the Rhine Valley and opens wide views over the Lake Constance region towards the Vorarlberg Alps and – in particularly clear conditions – as far as the Black Forest.
The route to the Saxer Lücke forms part of the classic multi-day hike through the Appenzell Alps and connects Wasserauen with Altstätten in the Rhine Valley. The ascent from Wasserauen via the Fälensee to the Saxer Lücke is very well suited as a day hike. The limestone formations along the route are of particular geological significance.
The Saxer Lücke is reachable from Wasserauen on foot in around 2.5 to 3 hours. Wasserauen is accessible by Appenzellerbahn from Appenzell in around 10 minutes. No motorised access to the saddle; parking in Wasserauen.
