The Churfirsten are a distinctive cliff range between Lake Walen and the Toggenburg, whose seven summits form a near-vertical wall above the lake. The wall is clearly visible from the motorway and is one of the most impressive mountain scenes in northern Switzerland. The individual peaks – Selun, Frümsel, Brisi, Zuestoll, Gauschla, Hinterrugg and Scheibenstoll – are all reachable on foot.
The hike to the Hinterrugg (2'306 m) – the highest Churfirsten summit – starts from Unterwasser in the Toggenburg and takes around 3 to 4 hours. The view from the ridge takes in Lake Walen, Lake Zurich, the Appenzell pre-Alps and the Glarus Alps. The Churfirsten ridge trail is one of the most spectacular ridge routes in eastern Switzerland.
The Churfirsten are climbed from Unterwasser or Wildhaus in the Toggenburg. Unterwasser is accessible by train (Toggenburg line) from Wattwil. By car, take the A3 motorway via Wattwil into the Toggenburg.
