In the Canton of Aargau, on a steep rocky hill above the Aare river, Aarburg Castle perches – a medieval fortress carrying more than 800 years of Swiss history. This imposing castle complex was founded around 1200 by the Lords of Büron and controlled a strategically important gorge of the river to oversee the then north-south trade route. The fortress changed hands several times and was rebuilt multiple times over the centuries.

The castle captivates with its impressive location directly above the river and its massive stone walls. The towering fortification tower and ring walls bear witness to medieval defensibility. Today the castle houses an interesting Historical Museum telling the story of this Aargau fortress and its region. From the bastions one has a magnificent view of the Aare valley and surrounding landscape.

Aarburg ranks among the oldest and most imposing castles of the Canton of Aargau. The castle complex is well-preserved and still maintained today. A visit to this Aargau fortress is a journey back to the medieval epoch of Switzerland.
