Andermatt at around 1'444 metres in the Urseren Valley sits at the junction of the Gotthard, Furka and Oberalp crossings – it is the heart of the Swiss Alps, both geographically and strategically. The village was long a military base and has radically reinvented itself in recent years through the Andermatt Swiss Alps resort: luxury hotels, a golf course and a modern ski area have transformed the village into an international destination.

The Andermatt-Sedrun-Disentis ski area, since its expansion phase, is one of the largest in Central Switzerland and offers demanding runs and extensive high-alpine terrain. In summer Andermatt is the starting point for tours over the Gotthard Pass, the Furka and the Oberalp. The Urseren Valley itself is a broad, windy alpine valley with a distinctive, almost austere character.

Andermatt is on the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway and reachable from Göschenen (A2 motorway) in around 10 minutes or from Disentis by train in around 45 minutes. By car, take the Göschenen exit (A2) and then drive through the Gotthard road tunnel – or via the seasonal Gotthard Pass road.
