The Cascata La Froda in the Valle di Froda – a side valley of the Verzasca Valley – is one of Ticino's most impressive waterfalls, dropping in a broad veil over around 100 metres of cliff into a green basin. The fall is especially dramatic in spring and early summer when snowmelt swells the flow.
Access to the waterfall is via a hiking trail from Sonogno and takes around 30 to 45 minutes. The path passes through the typical Ticino rustico village and then heads up-valley through chestnut forests. The pool beneath the waterfall is a popular resting spot. The combination of waterfall, rocky basin and wild Ticino landscape is particularly rewarding photographically.
The Cascata La Froda is reachable on foot from Sonogno. Sonogno is accessible by PostBus from Locarno in around 1 hour 15 minutes. By car, drive through the Verzasca Valley to Sonogno; parking available in the village.
