The Hoher Kasten is the most distinctive viewpoint in the Appenzell Alps and offers one of the widest panoramas in eastern Switzerland: on clear days the summit overlooks Lake Constance, the Vorarlberg Alps, the Säntis and far across the Mittelland. The characteristic cliff face is recognisable from a distance throughout the Rhine Valley.
The Hoher Kasten cable car runs from Brülisau directly to the summit. At the top is the rotating Hoher Kasten Drehrestaurant – one of the few remaining revolving restaurants in Switzerland. Hiking trails lead towards the Sämtisersee, the Saxer Lücke and the Kamor. In winter the summit is snow-reliable and offers a short ski and toboggan slope.
The Hoher Kasten is reachable by cable car from Brülisau. Brülisau is accessible by Appenzellerbahn from Appenzell or by PostBus. By car, drive from Appenzell towards Rüte/Brülisau. Tickets: hoherkasten.ch
