The Säntis (2'501 m) is the highest peak of the Appenzell Alps and the landmark of eastern Switzerland. In good conditions, its viewing platform allows six countries to be seen simultaneously: Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, France and even Italy. The striking rocky massif attracts visitors and mountaineers from across the German-speaking alpine region.

The Säntis massif is served by the distinctive limestone ridge, the Schafberg and the Meglisalp. Hiking trails lead over the Saxer Lücke, from Schwägalp and from Stein AR to the summit. The Schwägalp cable car ascends from the valley station directly to the summit in just a few minutes. The summit plateau offers a restaurant, a weather station and the well-known transmission antenna that defines the Säntis silhouette.

The Säntis is reachable by Säntisbahn from the valley station Schwägalp in around 10 minutes. The Schwägalp is reachable by PostBus from Urnäsch or Neu St. Johann. By car, take the route via Urnäsch or Nesslau. Tickets: saentisbahn.ch
