Lac Bleu — Switzerland
Best time to visit

Duration

Canton
Valais

The Lac Bleu above Arolla in the Val d'Hérens draws visitors with its intensely turquoise water, coloured by fine glacial particles in suspension. This small mountain lake at around 2'090 metres sits amid a stark, rocky highland landscape and is one of the best-known photographic subjects in the Valais Alps. The reflections of the surrounding peaks in calm conditions are especially striking.

A well-marked circular trail connects the village of Arolla with the lake in around 45 to 60 minutes return. The route is well suited to children and less experienced walkers. In summer the area is a popular destination for day hikers from across the Val d'Hérens. Those with more time can extend the walk to one of the viewpoints in the surrounding area.

From Sion, a PostBus serves Arolla via Evolène, with a total journey time of around 1 hour 45 minutes. By car, Arolla is reachable via the cantonal road through the Val d'Hérens from the Sion Est motorway exit. Parking is available in the village of Arolla.
