The Matterhorn (4'478 m) is one of the most iconic peaks in the Alps and the enduring symbol of the Swiss mountain landscape. Its near-perfect pyramid shape – four steep faces rising almost in isolation – makes it instantly recognisable across the world. First summited in 1865 by Edward Whymper, it has drawn climbers and photographers ever since.

The most striking views of the Matterhorn can be found around Zermatt: from the Gornergrat, from the Stellisee with its famous mirror reflection, or from the Rifelsee. Hikers can follow the Hörnliweg up to the Hörnlihütte, the traditional base for the north-east ridge route. Surrounding glaciers, scree fields and rocky ridges convey the raw alpine character of the place.

The Matterhorn is accessed from car-free Zermatt, reached by train from Täsch or Visp. The journey from Zurich takes around three hours. Visitors arriving by car park in Täsch and continue by shuttle train to Zermatt.
