The Klöntalersee lies at around 848 metres in a secluded alpine valley in the canton of Glarus – enclosed by steep rocky slopes that reflect directly in the crystal-clear water. The reservoir is one of the most impressive high-valley landscapes in eastern Switzerland: no cable car, no major infrastructure, but unspoilt nature and a wide, quiet lake surface.

The cantonal road circles the lake and offers views of the water and the opposing Glärnisch cliff face at several points. Hiking trails lead from the lake circuit to the surrounding peaks and alps. In summer the Klöntalersee is a popular destination for peaceful swimming and hiking. Fishing boats and canoes enliven the water surface in summer.

The Klöntalersee is reachable from Glarus by PostBus in around 20 minutes. By car, drive from Glarus into the Klöntal. Parking is available at the lakeshore and on the cantonal road. Glarus is accessible by train from Zurich in around 1 hour.
