The Limmerensee at around 1'856 metres in the canton of Glarus is a spectacular reservoir in a narrow rock gorge, impressive for its intense turquoise colour and the sheer cliff faces all around. It is one of the most beautiful and least accessible reservoirs in Switzerland – the only motorised access is by cable car.
The Tierfehd–Limmerensee cable car is one of Switzerland's largest combined cargo and passenger cable cars and serves the reservoir shore. A hiking trail runs along the lake and connects it to the Muttsee on the plateau above. The area forms part of the Linthwerke hydropower station and combines natural experience with industrial architecture in a striking way.
The Limmerensee is reachable by cable car from Tierfehd in the Linthal. Tierfehd is accessible by PostBus from Linthal. Linthal is accessible by train from Zurich in around 1 hour. Tickets can be booked on site.
