Linthal is the head village of the Linthal Valley in the canton of Glarus, nestled at the foot of the great Glarus alpine backdrop. The village is the starting point for tours into the high-alpine areas around the Klausen Pass, the Urner Boden and the Tödi Group. The valley is defined by hydropower – the Limmerensee dam and the Linthwerke make Linthal a centre of Swiss hydropower technology.

From Linthal, the Tierfehd–Muttsee cable car ascends to the Muttsee at around 2'500 metres – one of the highest pumped-storage power stations in Europe. The Muttsee offers an impressive high-mountain landscape and is connected by hiking trail to the Limmerensee. The valley is accessible year-round but is particularly a hiking eldorado in the summer months.

Linthal is reachable by train (Glarner Sprinter from Zurich) in around 1 hour. By car, drive from Zurich via Glarus into the Linthal. Parking is available in the village. PostBuses run from Linthal into the surrounding side valleys.
