The Reichenbach Fall near Meiringen is Switzerland's most famous waterfall – not for its size, but for its literary significance: it was here that author Arthur Conan Doyle had his detective Sherlock Holmes plunge to his apparent death in a fictional struggle with Professor Moriarty. The fall drops in several cascades over around 250 metres and is accessible from a viewing path.

The Reichenbach funicular – a historic railway dating from 1899 – climbs from Meiringen to the level of the waterfall. At the top, a viewpoint overlooks the fall and the Haslital. In Meiringen itself, a Sherlock Holmes Museum is dedicated to the literary heritage of the place. The combination of natural spectacle, history and literature makes the visit unique.

The Reichenbach Fall lies on the edge of Meiringen, reachable by train from Interlaken Ost in around 35 minutes. The funicular runs seasonally; on foot the fall is accessible from Meiringen in around 45 minutes. Funicular tickets: reichenbachfall.ch
