Grindelwald sits at the foot of the Eiger North Face and is one of Switzerland's best-known mountain villages. The village at around 1'034 metres looks directly up at the imposing north face of the Eiger (3'967 m) – one of the most famous cliff faces in the Alps – and is the base for the extensive Grindelwald-First ski area as well as ascents to Kleine Scheidegg and the Jungfraujoch.

In summer Grindelwald draws hikers up to the First plateau, where via ferratas, the First Cliff Walk and glacier hikes to the Upper Glacier await. The village has a broad tourist infrastructure with hotels, restaurants and shops in every category. In winter, Grindelwald is part of the vast Jungfrau Ski Region, linked with Wengen and Mürren and covering over 200 kilometres of pistes.

Grindelwald is reachable by train from Interlaken Ost on the Berner Oberland-Bahn in around 35 minutes. By car, take the road from Interlaken via Wilderswil into the valley; parking is available in the village and at the Grund station.
