The Bachalpsee at around 2'265 metres above Grindelwald is one of the best-known mountain lakes in the Bernese Oberland. On clear days, the Schreckhorn (4'078 m) and Finsteraarhorn (4'274 m) reflect in its still water – a panorama that draws photographers and hikers alike. The lake is often still ringed by patches of snow in summer, giving it a distinctly high-alpine feel.

From the First mountain station, the Bachalpsee is reached on foot in around 45 minutes along a well-maintained trail. The path is suitable for walkers of moderate fitness. Those continuing can hike over the Faulhorn to Schynige Platte – one of the classic long crossings of the Bernese Oberland. In good conditions, a detour to the slightly higher Upper Bachalpsee is also worthwhile.

The starting point First is reached by gondola from Grindelwald village in around 25 minutes. Grindelwald is reachable from Interlaken Ost by train in approximately 35 minutes. Tickets: jungfrau.ch
