Stoos is Switzerland's highest car-free village, sitting at around 1'300 metres in the canton of Schwyz high above Lake Lucerne. The journey up is an experience in itself: the Stoosbahn – the world's steepest funicular with a maximum gradient of 110% – carries visitors from Morschach to the plateau in just a few minutes. The village has the character of a ski resort without car noise.
From Stoos, hiking trails lead to the Fronalpstock (1'922 m) and along the ridge with one of the widest lake views in Switzerland. In winter the Stoos ski area offers around 35 kilometres of pistes and a small but atmospheric après-ski scene. The village is known for its honest, family-friendly mountain atmosphere without excessive commercialisation.
Stoos is reachable by Stoosbahn from Morschach/Schlattli. Morschach is accessible by PostBus from Brunnen in around 10 minutes. Brunnen is reachable by train from Zurich in around 50 minutes. Tickets: stoos.ch
