The Giessbach Falls cascade down fourteen tiers over around 500 vertical metres along the steep cliffs of the southern shore of Lake Brienz – one of the most impressive water spectacles in Switzerland. Directly alongside stands the Grand Hotel Giessbach, a historic Belle Époque hotel from the 19th century that adds an architectural gem to the romance of the setting.
A developed trail with bridges and viewpoints leads upward alongside the falls, offering views of the rushing water from multiple angles. The Grand Hotel with its terrace above the lake is a destination in itself. The world's oldest still-operating funicular – the Giessbachbahn – connects the boat jetty with the hotel. A boat trip from the lake is particularly recommended.
The Giessbach Falls are reachable from Interlaken Ost by boat in around 35 minutes, or by train to Brienz then by boat. By car, go via Iseltwald along the southern shore; parking is limited. Boat services: bls.ch
