The Silsersee is the westernmost and highest of the four large Engadine lakes and is considered one of the finest alpine lakes in Switzerland. The water glows in a deep blue-green, surrounded by the snow-capped peaks of the Engadine Alps – in calm conditions a reflection forms that doubles the panorama. The village of Sils Maria sits on a peninsula in the middle of the lake.

The lakeshore path around the Silsersee passes through a landscape whose simplicity sets it apart from other tourist destinations: no cable cars, no roads at the water's edge, just nature and mountain air. The path is walkable year-round and used in winter as a snowshoe route too. The Maloja Pass at the western end of the lake opens the view into the Val Bregaglia and is a classic cycling descent.

The Silsersee is on the main road of the Upper Engadine between Maloja and St. Moritz. Reachable by PostBus from St. Moritz in around 20 minutes. By car, take the cantonal road. St. Moritz is reachable by Rhaetian Railway from Chur in around 2 hours.
