In the Canton of Bern, where Thun was one of Switzerland's most significant castle towns, the imposing Thun Castle perches on a height above the city and its namesake lake. This mighty castle complex was founded by the Zähringer and continues to define the cityscape with its terracotta roofs and fortified towers. The castle houses a historical museum today and offers spectacular panoramic views of Lake Thun and surrounding mountains.

The castle was built around 1180 and boasts over 840 years of history. The massive fortification walk and proud towers testify to its former strategic importance. The museum inside takes visitors through different epochs of Swiss history – from armor to artwork to documents from past times. The architecture itself is impressive with its stone walls and characteristic ring wall.

Visitors to the castle complex are captivated by the atmosphere of this Bernese fortress. The viewing platforms offer unrestricted views of Lake Thun and Alpine chains rising in the distance. This is a place where history comes alive.
