The Aareschlucht near Meiringen is one of the most impressive river gorges in Switzerland: the Aare has carved its way up to 200 metres deep into the limestone over millennia, creating a narrow, winding passage that in places is only one metre wide. The gorge is developed with two secured walkways and can be walked as a through route or circular trail.

The passage through the gorge takes between 45 minutes and 1.5 hours depending on the variant. The cool, damp atmosphere, turquoise water and overhanging cliff faces create an intense natural experience. The gorge is accessible year-round – varying by season – and is particularly dramatic in spring when snowmelt swells the Aare into a rushing torrent.

The Aareschlucht lies between Meiringen and Innertkirchen and is reachable from Meiringen by PostBus or on foot in around 20 minutes. Meiringen is accessible by train from Interlaken Ost in around 35 minutes. Parking is available at both gorge entrances. Admission is charged: aareschlucht.ch
