The Creux du Van is an imposing natural rock amphitheatre in the Neuchâtel Jura, with sheer limestone walls around 160 metres high and a diameter of about one kilometre. The natural wonder is one of Switzerland's most impressive geological sights and is often called the «Grand Canyon of the Swiss Jura». Ibex graze on the crater rim – the colony here is one of Switzerland's best-known wild populations.

The classic ascent to the rim of the Creux du Van from Noiraigue takes around 2 to 2.5 hours and passes through the outliers of the Gorges de l'Areuse to the plateau edge. Those arriving early in the morning and with luck will spot ibex directly on the rocky rim. The site is accessible year-round and has a special atmosphere in autumn and winter.

The Creux du Van is reachable on foot from Noiraigue (by train from Neuchâtel in around 30 minutes) in around 2 hours. By car, drive from Neuchâtel via Boudry and Noiraigue. Parking in Noiraigue; from there on foot only.
