Over 1000 years old, the castle of Neuchâtel towers majestically above the city of the same name and gave the place its name – ""Novum Castellum,"" the New Castle. This remarkable complex was founded around 1000-1100 and experienced an extraordinarily eventful history: from noble families through French dukes to Prussian kings, all of whom left their mark on the architecture. In 1848 the castle became property of the canton.

The architecture of the Château displays a fascinating mixture of Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance styles – each stylistic period documents a layer of European history. The neighboring Gothic Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame, built in the 12th-13th centuries, ranks among the most notable sacred buildings of western Switzerland. The courtyard and gardens invite quiet strolls.
