The Gelmerbahn is the steepest open-air funicular in Europe – with a maximum gradient of 106 percent, it hauls visitors up from the Handegg reservoir to the wildly romantic Gelmersee at around 1'849 metres. The open car with no roof or side walls offers a dizzying view straight down and across the rocky peaks of the Haslital Alps on the steep ascent.

At the top, a small turquoise mountain lake awaits, surrounded by a circular trail. The walk around the Gelmersee takes around 45 minutes along rocky paths with views of the dam and surrounding peaks. The area is particularly well suited to day hikers seeking an untamed mountain setting. Sturdy footwear and a sure foot are required.

The Gelmerbahn departs from Handegg in the Haslital, reachable by PostBus from Meiringen in around 30 minutes. By car, drive from Meiringen via Innertkirchen to Handegg. The railway runs seasonally from late May to mid-October. Tickets: grimselwelt.ch
