Lai Nair – Romansh for «black lake» – lies at around 1'400 metres near Tarasp in the Lower Engadine and owes its name to the dark, peaty water fed by surrounding moorland. This tranquil forest lake set among larch trees and mountain pines is one of the most atmospheric natural spots in the region.

A gentle circular trail leads around the lake in about 30 to 45 minutes and connects with footpaths towards Tarasp and Scuol. In autumn, when the larches glow golden, Lai Nair is especially photogenic. The terrain is largely flat and easily walkable for all ages.

Lai Nair is reachable on foot from Tarasp or Scuol in around 20 to 30 minutes. Scuol is reachable by Rhaetian Railway from Chur in around 2 hours. Parking is available in Tarasp and Fontana.
