The Niesen at 2'362 metres is often called the «pyramid of the Bernese Oberland» for its striking pyramidal shape. Its summit commands one of the widest panoramas in the Pre-Alps – from the Bernese four-thousanders across the Jura range to the Black Forest and, in exceptional conditions, as far as Mont Blanc. The long, straight line of the Niesen funicular is one of the most memorable sights in the region.

The funicular, whose upper section at 1'660 metres is one of the longest in the world, climbs from Mülenen to the summit. From the top station, trails run along the ridge to the Niesen Kulm restaurant. In summer the Niesen offers a clear-cut hiking area; in winter it remains a atmospheric snow excursion destination, accessible by rail.

The Niesen is reached by funicular from Mülenen. Mülenen is on the BLS line between Spiez and Frutigen, reachable from Spiez in around 10 minutes. By car, park at the valley station in Mülenen. Tickets: niesen.ch
