The Pilatus at 2'128 metres is the local mountain of Lucerne and one of the most well-known viewpoints in central Switzerland. Its summit – Pilatus Kulm – overlooks Lake Lucerne, the city of Lucerne, the Mittelland to the Jura ranges and the entire Central Alps. The distinctive silhouette of the Pilatus defines Lucerne's cityscape and is recognisable from a great distance.

The Pilatus Railway – the world's steepest rack railway with a maximum gradient of 48% – ascends from Alpnachstad to the summit. Alternatively, the Pilatus is reachable by gondola and cable car from Kriens. On the summit plateau there are two hotels, a restaurant and hiking trails along the ridge. In winter the summit is snow-covered in fine weather and offers a striking winter panorama.

The Pilatus is reachable by Pilatus Railway from Alpnachstad (accessible by train or boat from Lucerne) or by gondola from Kriens (by bus from Lucerne). The Pilatus Railway runs seasonally from May to November. Tickets: pilatus.ch
