Rosenlaui in the Reichenbachtal above Meiringen is a remote valley of almost unreal beauty – a glacier garden, a gorge and a historic 19th-century mountain hotel combine to form one of the most atmospheric corners of the Bernese Oberland. The valley was once a destination for the English upper classes and served as inspiration for Sherlock Holmes author Arthur Conan Doyle.
The Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge is accessible via a circular trail and reveals striking views of glacially polished rock passages, waterfalls and turquoise meltwater. Hotel Rosenlaui is an authentic 19th-century mountain hotel and a living witness to the early days of alpine tourism. Trails lead from here to the Engelhörner group and further into the Urbachtal.
Rosenlaui is reachable from Meiringen by PostBus towards Schwarzwaldalp in around 25 minutes. By car, drive from Meiringen via Gschwandtenmaad up the valley. Parking is available at the gorge. Gorge entrance is charged: rosenlauischlucht.ch
