The Rigi – the «Queen of the Mountains» – is a freestanding mountain ridge between Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug and Lake Lauerz, and at 1'798 metres one of the world's most famous panoramic peaks. From its summit – the Rigi Kulm – 73 alpine summits are visible, as well as the entire Swiss Mittelland and on clear days as far as the Black Forest.
The Vitznau–Rigi Railway (1871) is the first mountain railway in Europe – a historic pioneering achievement still in operation today. In summer, extensive hiking trails, including the Rigi Panorama Trail and the route to Rigi Kaltbad, invite day excursions. In winter the Rigi is a popular family skiing and toboggan area. Sunrise journeys to Rigi Kulm have a long tradition.
The Rigi is reachable by rack railway from Vitznau (boat from Lucerne) or from Arth-Goldau (train from Zurich). Tickets and timetables: rigi.ch
