The Lago di Val Viola lies in the south of Graubünden in the fascinating Poschiavo region at approximately 2,400 meters – situated behind the more famous Lago di Saoseo, yet equally enchanting and wild. This alpine lake captivates with its Mediterranean flair amid dramatic mountain landscape. Val di Campo flows into the lake and creates a fascinating river landscape with bubbling mountain water. The lake is framed by steep, dark rock walls creating a dramatic backdrop and catching the sun's rays in special ways.
The hike to the lake is part of a popular circuit that also includes Lago di Saoseo – a wonderfully flexible hiking destination for all grades of alpine hikers. Along the way you traverse alpine meadows and larch forests. As elevation increases, flora and fauna change – rare mountain herbs and marmots characterize the area. The lake itself is accessible from June to September when snow fields have melted.
The southern position of the region lends it an almost Mediterranean air – the mountains are less snow-covered than further north. This is a place for hikers seeking beauty off the beaten path and appreciating remoteness. The interplay of Lago di Saoseo and Lago di Val Viola creates a unique mountain world, counting among the most hidden jewels of Graubünden.
