The Morteratsch Glacier is the largest glacier in the Bernina group and one of the best-known accessible glaciers in Switzerland. From the Morteratsch railway station, a well-marked trail leads in around 1.5 hours to the current glacier tongue – a striking testament to glacial retreat, with marker stones documenting the former ice position in various decades.
The walk to the glacier passes through a broad glacial valley with views of the rocky peaks of the Piz Palü and Piz Bernina. The path is straightforward and suitable for families. The glacier itself should not be entered – the glacier tongue is unstable and dangerous. For guided glacier tours to the higher sections, local mountain guides in Pontresina are available.
The Morteratsch station is on the Bernina Railway line between Pontresina and the Bernina Pass. From St. Moritz, Morteratsch is reachable by Rhaetian Railway in around 20 minutes. Parking is available at the station.
