Gimmelwald at around 1'367 metres is one of the last genuinely traditional farming villages in the Bernese Oberland – no ski resort, no hotel boom, just a small village that has kept its original character. Those who make the journey find alpine silence, old timber houses and authentic mountain life on a sun-facing rocky terrace above the Lauterbrunnen Valley.

The trails around Gimmelwald lead to Mürren, the Schilthorn and down to Stechelberg. The village serves as a stop on the way to the cable car towards the Schilthorn and, despite its modest size, offers a few small guesthouses and a mountain restaurant. For those seeking quiet and wishing to avoid mass tourism, Gimmelwald is an ideal base.

Gimmelwald is reached by cable car from Stechelberg in the Lauterbrunnen Valley; the journey takes around 5 minutes. Stechelberg is accessible from Lauterbrunnen by PostBus. Lauterbrunnen is reachable from Interlaken Ost in 20 minutes. Cars must be parked in Lauterbrunnen or Stechelberg.
