The Viamala is one of Switzerland's best-known and most impressive gorges: the Hinterrhein has carved several kilometres deep – up to 300 metres – into the grey dolomite rock, creating a passage of oppressive narrowness and magnificent beauty. The gorge was for centuries one of the greatest obstacles on the route south.

A developed path with bridges and stairs leads through the gorge and opens up views of the rushing water and overhanging cliff faces. A visit is possible year-round; in spring and after rainfall the Hinterrhein is at its most powerful. The neighbouring Rofla Gorge is a further excursion destination in the area. Both gorges lie close together in the Schams valley.

The Viamala is on the cantonal road between Thusis and Andeer in the Hinterrhein Valley. Reachable by PostBus from Chur in around 30 minutes (to Thusis). By car, take the A13 motorway from Chur to the Thusis exit. Admission is charged: viamala.ch
