The Rhine Gorge – nicknamed the «Swiss Grand Canyon» – is the largest gorge in the Alps: the Vorderrhein has cut up to 400 metres deep into the limestone over around 13 kilometres, creating a landscape of dramatic beauty. The brilliantly turquoise colour of the river, the sheer white cliff faces and the dense green vegetation create a scene that feels almost un-Swiss.
The gorge is accessible via several hiking trails along the river, by kayak and on the Rhaetian Railway line, which crosses the gorge on a spectacular stretch. The best-known access points are Versam, Flims and Valendas-Sagogn. In summer, operators in Bonaduz offer guided kayak and raft trips through the gorge.
The Rhine Gorge is reachable from Chur on the Rhaetian Railway towards Disentis – stops within the gorge are Valendas-Sagogn and Versam-Safien. By car, take the cantonal road from Chur or Reichenau. Train tickets: rhb.ch
