Interlaken sits between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz and is the tourism centre of the Bernese Oberland – an ideal base for the entire Jungfrau region, the lakes and the surrounding mountain areas. The town at around 570 metres combines international hotels, shopping and an active outdoor scene in a compact centre.
The broad Höhematte meadow in the heart of the town offers an unobstructed view of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau – a rare sight within an urban setting. Interlaken is well known as a base for paragliding, canyoning, rafting and other outdoor activities throughout the Bernese Oberland. The Tourism Museum and the historic ruins of the former Augustinian monastery are also worth a visit.
Interlaken has two railway stations: Interlaken West and Interlaken Ost. From Bern the train journey takes around 50 minutes; from Zurich approximately 2 hours. By car the town is accessible via the A8 motorway. Large car parks are located at West station and in the town centre.
