Thun is the gateway town of the Bernese Oberland, combining lively urban life with an alpine backdrop. The historic town centre with its distinctive Obere Hauptgasse – where pavements run along the rooftops of the arcaded buildings below – and the imposing Thun Castle on the castle hill are among the most remarkable townscapes in Switzerland.

Thun Castle houses a history museum with views over the Bernese Alps and Lake Thun. Along the Aare and at the lake outflow there are well-maintained promenades and swimming spots. In summer, boats run on Lake Thun to Interlaken and Spiez. The old town is compact and offers cafés, boutiques and characterful restaurants.

Thun is reachable by train from Bern in around 20 minutes, from Zurich in around 1 hour 20 minutes. By car, the town is accessible via the A6 motorway towards Bern-Thun. Car parks are available in the town centre and at the station.
