Lake Thun is the western of the two large lakes of the Bernese Oberland and one of the finest alpine lakes in Switzerland. Stretching around 18 kilometres, it offers an expansive lake landscape between Interlaken and the old town of Thun, with the iconic trio of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau as backdrop.
The lake shores are lined with wine villages, castles and small bays. Spiez with its medieval castle right on the water, Oberhofen with its romantic moated castle and the Faulensee peninsula are particular highlights. In summer, paddle steamers run regular services on the lake; swimming and sailing opportunities abound at many points along the shore. Lake Thun is also the departure point for mountain railways up the Niederhorn and the Stockhorn.
The lake is accessible by train from Bern in around 30 minutes (to Thun). By car, take the A6 motorway to Thun or Spiez. Various car parks are available along the lakeside promenade.
