Davos is the highest city in Europe at around 1'560 metres and is known as the venue for the World Economic Forum (WEF) and as one of the largest ski and congress centres in the Alps. The Parsenn area, the Jakobshorn and the Rinerhorn slopes make up an extensive ski area that ranks among the largest in Switzerland.
Davos has a literary dimension: Thomas Mann's «The Magic Mountain», which describes life in the city's high-altitude sanatoriums, brought Davos world renown. The Kirchner Museum houses the largest collection of works by expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, who lived here. In summer, Lake Davos offers bathing opportunities, and the hiking area around the Weissfluhjoch research station is extensive.
Davos is reachable by Rhaetian Railway from Chur in around 1.5 hours. By car, take the Landwasser road or come via Klosters. Parking is available in the city centre and at the mountain railway stations.
