The Lauterbrunnen valley is considered one of the finest glacial valleys in the Alps: within a confined space, 72 waterfalls cascade from vertical cliff faces into the valley – including the Staubbachfall, which at 297 metres is one of the highest free-falling waterfalls in Europe. The village of Lauterbrunnen is the gateway to the car-free mountain villages of Wengen and Mürren and forms the heart of the Jungfrau tourism region.
The valley draws both leisurely walkers and extreme sports enthusiasts: Lauterbrunnen is world-renowned for BASE jumping and wingsuit flying from the surrounding cliff faces. The Trümmelbachfall – a glacial waterfall roaring inside the mountain, accessible by lift – is one of the most extraordinary geological spectacles in Switzerland. The village centre is compact with shops, restaurants and accommodation in every category.
Lauterbrunnen is reachable by train from Interlaken Ost in around 20 minutes. By car, the village is accessible with large car parks available. From Lauterbrunnen, the Wengernalpbahn serves Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg, and the Grütschalp cable car runs towards Mürren.
